How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process
Windows are essential to your home’s beauty and comfort; they give you a wonderful view of outside, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your indoor space. Because they are so important to a home, they see a lot of action. It’s a good idea to keep your windows clean so that they can continue to do their job well.
Window glass can get dirty pretty easily, particularly with little hands or pets in the home, but fortunately glass cleaning isn’t difficult. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have features that make it easier to clean the exterior of your windows from indoors, too. Looking for an easy, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors recommends:
- Start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that gathers on the sill and ledges will remain there for a long time otherwise, and doing this first will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Do not use the same cleaning duster that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
- Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment over the side of your window screen that faces in. You can also use this vacuum piece to grab any leftover dirt and dust along your sills.
- Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your window’s glass. You can make your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Apply your cleaner generously to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from multiple different directions for the best clean.
- Give your windows time to air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if you see streaks.
Here are some more tips, too! We recommend cleaning your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too quickly and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals favor microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.
Take care of your beautiful view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean in every season.
